Respiratory Mechanisms

The respiratory system regulates the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO₂), which directly influences blood pH:

- **Increased Breathing Rate**: When CO₂ levels rise (e.g., during exercise), the body increases the breathing rate to expel more CO₂, reducing acidity.
- **Decreased Breathing Rate**: When CO₂ levels are low, the breathing rate decreases, retaining CO₂ and increasing acidity.
